The boss meter is your run timer. Tutorial footage explains that every Starmap node advances boss research, while the meter shows tech already researched and what comes next. Use that preview to decide whether a detour is worth the pressure and to accept ship rewards that counter the enemy composition you are about to face.

What the meter tells you

The tutorial specifically recommends using this information to choose ship rewards that counter the enemy troops. It also confirms two details that are easy to miss: the first tech of every run is always a ship upgrade, and the tech icons on the meter indicate which upgraded enemy ships will appear as bonus opponents during missions.

  • Which boss techs have already been researched this run.
  • What the boss is researching next.
  • Which upgraded ship types will appear as opponents during missions.
  • How much pressure you are creating by visiting additional Starmap nodes.

The time pressure is explicit, not implied

Tutorial narration states it directly: the longer you stay in a sector, the more powerful the enemy becomes, and every node you visit triggers more boss research progress. Named sector leaders such as the tutorial’s Voltari commander are the faces of that pressure. Treat the meter as the run’s clock—loitering to farm a mediocre node can hand the boss the exact tech that invalidates your fleet.

Counter-draft before the tech lands

These are examples from the tutorial, not a full matchup chart. Enhancements, Relics, faction mechanics and later balance changes can alter the practical result.

Bosses were overhauled before Early Access

The July 2026 recap says bosses were reworked for stronger phase identity, roughly 35 new sets of boss techs were added, and bosses can work in Free Play with any faction. The same notes specifically name Administer Oserath as Boss 5. That is enough to confirm a deeper boss layer, but not enough to publish a complete final-boss walkthrough before launch.
