Start by reading the boss meter before every Starmap move, then build enough economy to replace losses without over-investing in side nodes. Your first job is not to chase a perfect build: keep a functional counter mix, spend resources before pressure spikes, and take routes whose reward is worth the boss research you advance.

Your first five decisions

Fleetbreakers compresses RTS decisions into short missions, so the expensive mistake is usually not one bad click—it is entering the next node with the wrong fleet, too little replacement money, or a boss meter you have ignored.

The pre-release build starts Cobalt players with the core combat roles available early enough to react to the counter loop. Treat each mission as a small budget problem: what do you need to survive this node, and what can wait until the next one?

  • Check the boss meter before choosing a route. Every visited node advances boss research in the video-backed tutorial flow.
  • Keep a mixed answer to Specialist/Assault/Guardian/Siege threats instead of filling every slot with the highest-rarity ship you see.
  • Build Extractors when the mission is safe enough to repay the investment; the current demo removed the old fixed two-Extractor cap.
  • Do not rely on resource crates for the mission’s main payout. Current Resource Missions grant their primary resources automatically on victory.
  • Preserve enough Metal/Prisma to replace squadron losses. Mid-combat training is a resource sink, not a free reset.

Read the counter loop, not just rarity

A 2025 tutorial transcript explicitly teaches that Scouts counter Rail Cannons and Launchers, Rail Cannons counter Tanks, and Tanks counter Scouts and Fighters. That relationship matters because the boss meter previews what enemy ship upgrades are coming.

TanksRail Cannons / Siege pressureTutorial text presents Rail Cannons as the counter to Tanks.

Do not dawdle on the Starmap

The boss meter advances as you visit nodes. That means an extra detour has a real price: the enemy’s next tech arrives sooner. Take side content when it fixes a weakness, unlocks a meaningful relic/build direction, or pays enough resources to offset the pressure.

  • Resource node with a visible payout you need now: usually worth considering.
  • Relic encounter that completes a clear synergy: often worth the detour.
  • Low-value detour while your current fleet already answers the next boss tech: usually skip.

Repair and replacement are part of the economy

Recent official updates added a purchasable Repair Mothership ability to the Starbase. Earlier playtest footage repeatedly shows players running out of ships or wishing they could repair; the current system gives you a planned survivability outlet instead of forcing every run to snowball perfectly.
